How the Switch Became my Indie Machine

I felt burned by Nintendo. Almost like they’d let me down. While I still played my 3DS, the Wii U was a device I was becoming increasingly resentful of. Support for the console dried up almost immediately after a strong 3rd party developer presence upon release. After only a short few years, It was a device I was buying one, maybe two, games for a year. And even then the games I were buying, I’d only end up playing them for a few hours before they just started gathering dust on my shelf, forgotten.

I became increasingly frustrated with the device and Nintendo, and as a result was very reluctant to pick up the Nintendo Switch when it was released last year. But like the predictable, weak willed consumer that I am, the promise of a new Zelda and Mario titles eventually wore me down enough to pick one of these up when stock eventually became available again. And guess what happened…

My time at EGX 2017

So I went to EGX again this year. This would be the point in the article where, if I’d have been a real journalist, I’d have given a brief background into EGX. But I honestly can’t be bothered to make that kind of effort right now. All you need to know is that it’s a big video gaming and culture convention that take place in the West Midlands of the U.K. for 4 days a year.

It’s the third time I’ve gone in as many years and it’s pretty standard fare as far as these type of conventions go. A bunch of developers, large and small, show up and pedal their wares, so to speak. On top of that there are plenty of other attractions. People selling niche and retro merchandise based on video games, or other things the type of people who go to this type of event will probably like. Continue reading “My time at EGX 2017”

I got the Sonic Mania

There comes a point where being a Sonic fan is also to be a Sonic apologist. I’ll put my hands up and say that most Sonic games that have been released in the past 15, maybe 20, years have been bad. There have been some good ones. But you could argue that they’re good by my terrible standards and aren’t actually worth anything out of nostalgic context.

One thing that people who aren’t ingrained into this suffering/series tend to agree on is that the original games, the old 16-Bit releases, were actually pretty decent. So it amazes me that it took Sega so long to come out with a game like Sonic Mania. Continue reading “I got the Sonic Mania”

Sonic Forces. Glasses Wolf. Why?

Y’know what my favourite Sonic game of the past decade has been? Sonic Generations, an opinion most Sonic the Hedgehog apologists like myself probably hold. So when Sega and Sonic Team went back on saying they were going to make a sequel to it and announced Sonic Forces, I was suitably… Excited is too strong a word. Mildly optimistic is better.
