Wooderon Games of the Year 2018: 5 Best Old Video Games

Game culture has changed, it has for me at least. This past year I have found myself playing far fewer new games. It’s not that I’m spending less time gaming as a rule, rather, it’s because I’ve been investing in other services. Xbox’s Game Pass has been a great resource, giving me access to a ton of older games for a monthly fee.

The “Games as a service” approach from developers has also given games much longer lives than they would have had previously.

It’s a change that’s just getting started I feel, with the likes of Anthem, Skull and Bones, Fortnite and The Division 2 all on the horizon, it seems like every big studio wants their “living game”. Something people just play and play and they just keep supporting over time. Which, right now, suits me just fine.

Wooderon’s 3 most disappointing games of 2017

You saw this coming. As much as I sung the praises of 2017 as a year of great games, that doesn’t mean there isn’t still trash by the barrel full. As is standard fare for these annual lists I do at the end of every year, I top out a binge of positivity by complaining about something, three things to be precise. Just so you can start 2018 with a sour taste in your mouth. You’re welcome.

Without further waffle, here are the three games that disappointed me the most this year. Not to say they were necessarily bad games (although a couple of them kind of were). These are just the games I had the most hopes for, but ended up letting me down the most. Continue reading “Wooderon’s 3 most disappointing games of 2017”

Wooderon Games of the year 2017: #1

2017 has been a hell of a year for really fantastic video games. Not much else mind you, but video games; top notch. I remember in years gone by when compiling these types of lists, I struggled to put together a collection of ten truly great games. It was because the bottom end of the list sometimes felt like they were just filling the gaps. This year, there have been more games I actually wanted to talk about than I could fit onto this list. I could have easily made this a top 15 or maybe top 20 list. But I’m not an insane person.

Sure, I’ve talked a lot about the problems of Battlefront II and my personal conflicting feelings about Destiny 2. But they’re both games I am still playing and getting enjoyment out of. It’s because I like them so much that I complain, hoping they’ll get better. They instil a passion for the medium in me that makes me want to talk about them critically in the inane hope that someone might read them and actually act on my “expert” opinion. I still have a lot from this year I really want to catch up on. Resident Evil 7, Dishonored 2 and Nier: Automata to name just a few. There are already some really exciting looking games coming out early next year too. So no matter how crappy everything else seems to be going in the world. At least video games are great.

So, lets go through my entire top ten before putting a cap on this puppy:

#10: Prey

#9: Star Wars Battlefront II

#8: Cuphead

#7: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

#6: Destiny 2

#5: Horizon Zero Dawn

#4: Super Mario Odyssey

#3: Assassin’s Creed Origins

#2: Sonic Mania
