The Dragon Ball Super manga isn’t doing the Tournament of Power justice

The Dragon Ball Super anime ended in Japan a while ago. In an unusual twist, it’s the manga that has been lagging behind. That version of the story has only just reached the the introduction of Ultra Instinct. Since it started, the manga has been a reinterpretation of the story, altering details and the way things play out along the way. The version of the story told in the manga has been a stronger and more cohesive story in almost every regard too. Now we’re most of the way through the Tournament of Power though, I feel like the manga hasn’t been able to do that part of the story as much justice as it possibly could have.

Don’t get me wrong: The Dragon Ball Super anime was, by no means, perfect. In fact, it was riddled with problems in terms of its storytelling and animation. But, it was this story line that managed to get me genuinely excited to be watching Dragon Ball again. In a lot of ways though, the final arc of Dragon Ball Super felt catered specifically for that kind of weekly anime, and the manga suffers for it.

The Dragon Ball Super Movie: The Redemption of Broly

We’ve known there was a Dragon Ball Super movie coming for a while now. The nature of which didn’t become completely apparent until very recently, and let me tell you, that has a been a roller coaster of emotions for me personally. While it initially seemed like the premise of the movie focused around the original Super Saiyan/God: “Yamoshi”, that might have just been a bait and switch from Toei. A poster popped up online with the following subtitle. Confirming that the first Dragon Ball Super movie is going to focus on Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan.

Although, “Legendary” might not be the case any longer. While Broly is a character the Dragon Ball fandom know all too well, this isn’t going to be the same character who appeared in those past movies from the mid 90s. This is Akira Toriyama’s interpretation of the character, and this time he’s going to be canon. A reinvention of the character by the original creator.

10 Things I loved about Dragon Ball Super

I feel like I’m still recovering from that last post. Both because it spiralled into a monster in terms of length, but also because being very negative can be exhausting, especially when it comes to a show I ended up really enjoying by the time is was over. Sure, Dragon Ball Super had its problems, but it managed to improve by leaps and bounds by the time it was in its final story arc. To the point that I was pretty sad that at the potential that it was could be the end of Dragon Ball on television.

As more information comes to light though it’s almost a certainly that Dragon Ball isn’t over for good. The upcoming movie at the end of the year is picking up right where Super left off, at the end of the Tournament of Power. And the scuttlebutt from creators and producers heavily implies a new series will be starting again this time next year following that. Which is great news.

But in the meantime, let me spend some more time talking about Dragon Ball Super, specifically allow me to list 10 things (in no particular order) I really loved about this series. Again, if you’re not up to date with the show, like if you’re watching the show dubbed for example, then I’d recommend not reading any further unless you’re not fussed about spoilers.
