What Pokemon could learn from Digimon World: Next Order

Something has broken in my brain. A combination of me watching the rebooted series of Digimon Adventure and rediscovering what made me love the Pokemon games so much have become inexorably linked. The consequence of which saw me dropping all of the other, newer games I’d been playing and start a new game of the PS4 game from a few years ago: Digimon World: Next Order.

Next Order is a direct sequel to the 1999 Digimon World on the first Playstation; one of my favourite games for the platform. Upon playing these games back to back I feel like are a few things the Pokemon franchise might be able to learn from Digimon World.

3 Episode Rule – Digimon Adventure

I almost thought about just not including this series in the Spring season’s 3 Episode Rule archive. Because right after finishing the third episode I learned that, thanks to the COVID-19, Digimon Adventure is going to be taking an indefinite break, no doubt a result of the animation and production team being unable to physically do they jobs to get this series out.

But we’ve got three episodes out and  soI don’t see any reason not to talk about them, even if the 4th episode might not see the light of day until we hit the Summer season three months from now…

Looking Back At : Digimon World

Back in 2001 there was a war. One between two titans of children’s entertainment, both trying to outdo one another. This was, of course, the war between Digimon and Pokémon. Okay, let’s be honest, it was less of a war and more of Bandai desperately trying to keep up with Pokémon huge success. And right in the middle of this war was me, happily enjoying both franchises simultaneously, because even back then I knew that brand loyalty was dumb.

Spawned from the Tamagotchi-like virtual pets, Namco decided to make a game to compete with the likes of Pokémon Red/Blue/Green, which gave us a game I was both fascinated and flummoxed by; Digimon World. To this day, have such fond memories of the game, and going back to it always felt like something I needed to do sooner or later. Would it be something I’d end up regretting?
