10 Reasons Dragon Ball Super Sucked

Here it is, the long awaited follow up to my most viewed post on this blog by an absolute stupid margin.  You know, that one time I ranted about why the Majin Buu Arc of Dragon Ball Z sucked. I’m a bit more educated on Akira Toriyama’s writing process since then though, and so I don’t look back on that arc so harshly anymore. Part of that comes from knowing a little more about what was happening behind the scenes, but the rest of it comes from spending the last two and half years watching Dragon Ball Super.

Now that the show is over, I feel like this is a good a time as any to look back and talk about it, considering the last time I spoke about Dragon Ball was back at the beginning of the Universe 6 arc. Back then I was still pretty negative about Super, but I’ve come to accept and enjoy it for what it was over time.

While Super did improve a lot, it was still riddled with problems right up until the end. So, to start off a three part series of me talking about Dragon Ball I’ve been thinking about doing for a while, here is my list of the ten things (in no particular order) that I felt sucked about Dragon Ball Super.

A word of warning, this will go into depth talking about all of Dragon Ball Super, so if you’re only caught up with the dubbed version of the show and want to avoid spoilers, I wouldn’t venture any further in here.

Dragonball Super still isn’t that great

I’ve been watching Dragonball Super on and off. I wrote about it once before on here, specifically to talk about the lack of quality animation and their choices to retell the Beerus and Resurrection F movies again in the anime. Of course I still watched them, maybe hoping for some minor changes to fix my gripes with some parts of those movies. But mainly I have been looking forward to the original plot for SuperStarkUprisingDBS1-1

Well they’re a few episodes into a totally original arc now and I’ve got to say, Dragonball Super still isn’t all that great. It’s a sad story I’ve seen many times before; fondly remembered series gets a revival, then proceeds to be fantastically mediocre. As strong a thing as nostalgia is, it can blind people from seeing that sometimes, things run their course. That they end for a reason. Continue reading “Dragonball Super still isn’t that great”

10 reasons the Majin Buu saga sucked

When it comes to Dragonball, my opinion is a great big double-edged sword. I think the perfect place for the series to end, from a storytelling perspective was with Goku defeating Freeza on Namek. It ended the Saiyan arc that started with Z and had Goku fulfilling a legendary prophecy to become the strongest fighter in the galaxy. Problem is, if that had happened, we wouldn’t have had any more Dragonball.

And while it wasn’t as tight as the series before, I still liked the Android Arc, it introduced some cool characters and had a ton of cool moments. It also came full circle on Gohan’s arc with Goku passing the torch to his son to become the new hero, thanks to the power the series had been eluding to since his introduction. Then again, if that had been the end, we wouldn’t have had anymore Dragonball. No Battle of the Gods, no Dragonball Super and no… Majun Buu saga.
