Ahiru No Sora made me enjoy basketball for the first time since Space Jam

I keep acting like I’m still some newbie to watching anime outside of the major shonen series out there. But at this point, I’ve been watching quite a broad array of different anime for a couple of years now. I’ve spent three seasons making a conscious effort to expand what I’m watching and try new things. Hence my “3 episode rule” series.

Yet, after this time there are still genres and series that surprise me that I can get into. Last fall I started watching Ahiru No Sora; a sport anime about a really short kid wanting to become a great basketball player. Never did I expect to become so invested in a series about a sport I actually kind of hate in real life.

My Thoughts on the 2019 Fall Anime Season

It occurs to me that I never really revised my 3 episode rule article at the end of 2019’s summer season. I kind of just forgot to follow up on those shows and how things ended up panning out with them. I had always intended to make up for that with this post, talking about the shows I ended up watching in the following season, but then the end of year happened and I had to write a bunch of top ten stuff.

Y’know what though, I wouldn’t even say this is too late, I’m still weeks away from writing Winter 3 episode rule posts, that means there’s no better time to throw some opinions out there on the internet. I mean, that’s literally what the damned thing seems to be for anyway. So here are my summarised thoughts on the shows I watched from the 2019 Fall/Autumn anime season:

3 Episode Rule – Ahiru No Sora (Sky of the Duck)

Yeah, I’m doing this again. My endgame kind of needs work though as I never really followed up what I felt about the Summer season by the time it was over. I’ll have to try and remedy that this season, in ten weeks time. Anyway, this is the first in a series of posts in which I use the general rule of thumb in that you can generally tell if a series is worth watching or not within the first three episodes.

I’m trying to broaden my pallet a little by giving a chance to the kind of shows I normally don’t care about; and this show is one that is way out of my wheelhouse. Shiru No Sora is a sports anime, one about basketball. So, not only is it a genre I have never really found myself drawn to in the past, it’s also focusing on a sport that I also have no real interest in. Way to throw myself in the deep end.
