Wooderon Games of the Year 2017: #3

Top three time. True to form I’m struggling to think of anything else to write in this opening paragraph as the list comes to its climax. So let’s pull something out of my ass… This might the first time I’ve written one of these lists that hasn’t had a 3DS game on it. I might be showing my hand a little bit here despite the list not being over yet.

But it feels like Nintendo really are winding down on their handheld system now with the release and subsequent success of the Switch. It’s exciting really, seeing all of these games that were 3DS franchises making the move to to a device with graphics comparable to the Switch. Pokemon, Phoenix Wright, the Mario & Luigi RPG series. But the consequence is that the 3DS hasn’t had the best year. It’s had its last gasps, With the likes of Samus Returns, but I hope we hear something more concrete from Nintendo regarding it in the coming months.

Anyway, on with the list.

#10: Prey

#9: Star Wars Battlefront II

#8: Cuphead

#7: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

#6: Destiny 2

#5: Horizon Zero Dawn

#4: Super Mario Odyssey

Wooderon Games of the Year 2017: #6

This time last year I was talking about Nintendo and how I felt bad that they didn’t have that many good games for me to talk about. It wasn’t really a good time for them though to be fair. The Wii U was basically flopped into oblivion, and the 3DS is on its way out. It’s funny looking back, because, not to spoil anything about how this list is going to go, but Nintendo have bounced back in a big way.

I did get a Switch though. I held off for a while, after being burned by the Wii U. But I eventually crumbled and picked one up when there were a good handful of games out for it I felt I could sink my teeth into. And do you know what unexpected positive came from the Switch, it’s a hell of an indie game machine. I’ve found myself getting buried into Battle Chef Brigade and Steam World Dig 2 in a way I probably wouldn’t have ever done with them on console.

Anyway, time to crack my knuckles. I feel like this might be a long one.

Wooderon Games of the Year 2017: #9

This year, there were actually a few games that didn’t make it onto my list that I feel kind of bummed I didn’t get a chance to talk about. I could have squeezed this game and Prey off to talk about Battle Chef Brigade or Puyo Puyo Tetris, but I would have just come off as a right stuck up jackass if my GOTY list consisted of a ton of Indie games. I mean, it would have been dishonest… yeah.

At least I didn’t have the same problem I had last year where I was struggling to cobble ten games together worth talking about at all. Don’t get me wrong, I liked XCOM 2 just fine, but I couldn’t get passionate about it. Unless you’re talking pissed off as a type of passion.

Enough Waffle though, I’m going to get on with the list. Like previous years I’ll link the previous numbers in my list before teasing you with a link to see what I gave this entry.

#10: Prey
