Wooderon’s favourite Video Games of 2019 – #2

People keep talking about this thing called Christmas Limbo, some kind of fabled pocket of lost time that exists between Christmas and New Year’s. Well, I sure wish I could get some of that time as I sit here about to work my third shift since Christmas Day. To today’s entry though. Unlike my anime list, I really struggled to decide between my top two entries. In the end I made my choice, but I get the impression that on a different day, these would be the other way around. And in 12 months time, they very well may be. But this is the choice I went with and both games deserve some big recognition.

Apex Legends and their gilded ladder to nowhere

As a new event crests over the horizon for a popular video game, it’s inevitably accompanied by the not so distant yells of outrage for some reason or another. Not to undermine the perpetually hot topic that is cosmetic microtransactions in video games, but when it comes to Apex Legends, I can’t help but air on the side of a big ol’ shrug… Hey, anyone else smell hypocrisy in here?

Apex Legends Might be The Battle Royale Game I Can Actually Enjoy

I have a lot of time for Respawn Entertainment. Outside of them making Titanfall 2, which sorely underappreciated, in part due to a poorly time release window, the founders (Jason West and Vince Zampella) came from Infinity Ward before forming their own studio. Key people begin the huge swell of Call of Duty popularity off the back of Modern Warfare. And my personal favourite game in the franchise; Modern Warfare 2.

Apex Legends Might be The Battle Royale Game I Can Actually Enjoy

So, not only do I find out that Respawn have a new shooter out, and it’s set within the Titanfall universe, and it’s going to be free to play, and it’s already out! Of course I was going to drop whatever I was doing and desperately scramble to download it. The only thing that would cause me some sense of hesitation, would be the fact that it was a Battle Royale game, a burgeoning genre I, historically, never got along with. Apex Legends though, it’s managed to turn me around entirely.
