How can you get Sonic the Hedgehog so wrong when Detective Pikachu is getting it so right

I’ve had this one on the back burner for a while, but with the cataclysmic reaction to the trailer dropping for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, it felt an apt time to move this up the schedule and have this conversation now.

Both Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu are two movies with a number of notable similarities: They’re both video game adaptations that take their mascot characters and place them into the real world using CGI, they’re also both movies that had very vocal reactions when people first saw how they looked.

Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu is everything I was afraid it would be

Up until last week, I’d been really resistant to picking up Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu, the latest spinoff title from Nintendo and Game Freak. I call it a spinoff, because as much as the game is masquerading as a mainline entry into the series, it is one. Taking equal parts inspiration from the main series and the mobile game; Pokemon Go.

Despite the aggressively dismissive stand I had taken towards the game, after putting some time into it, I can fully understand why the game as as much positive word of mouth surround it as it does.

Can you really say more with silence: Part 2 – The inconsistently silent modern protagonist

Yesterday, I mostly talked about Nintendo’s home grown characters and how they went in two majorly different directions regarding both of them. This was mostly in regard to characters who has started as silent protagonists though, and a choice was forced upon the developer as to whether they should keep this up moving into the 21st century. Today, there are stilla  lot of developers that choose to give their games player characters who never utter a word.
