Is Ghostbusters: Afterlife an effective sequel-reboot?

I went into this movie pretty head empty. I’ve gone and become very cynical about movie reboots and belated sequels. For the most part, they seem to actively ignore the charm of what made those movies so beloved in the first place. Content to cash in on an easy bit of nostalgia.

Which is what the Ghostbusters remake of a few years ago seemed to be from what I understand. I wouldn’t know, I never bothered seeing it. With cinemas reopening and the prospect of them closing again looming on the horizon, I felt I would give Ghostbusters: Afterlife a shot and see how this 4th movie in the franchise faired.

GhostBusters: Afterlife – One more rant about Nostalgified remakes

This hot take will be a little out of date by the time it eventually goes up, but I’m sure that by the time it eventually does get posted, I’m sure some other nostalgically charged franchise will get a trailer for their surprise reboot or sequel. Just to pre-warn you all, this is going to be a little bit of a grumpy old man article, more-so than usual anyway, because I’m getting really tired of getting low balled by media companies going for these easy targets.

Stop confusing me with your movie titles

The fact that there is a new Ghostbusters movie in the works is something that keeps creeping up on me every time it slips from my concious memory. And it bothers me. Before you blow up though, I’m not bothered by the fact that it’s a female cast, I’m not that bothered by the fact that it’s being directed by Paul Feig (a man whose crude style of comedy isn’t really my thing). No, the thing that bothers me the most is that it’s God damn called Ghostbusters.

Ghostbusters was a movie that came out in 1984, Point Break was a movie that came out in 1991, Star Wars: Battlefront was a video game that came out in 2004. It’s one thing to start reusing titles from old ass movies, but calling something the same thing when it’s still fresh in every bodies memory is pointlessly confusing.
