I struggle to think of a movie franchise that needed a fresh start as badly as Transformers. The five movies that came before under Michael Bay’s guidance were tolerated at best by most of the fandom of the original franchise. Bumblebee is a tentative step in the direction of a reboot that also happens to be the best live action movie in the entire franchise.
The larger blockbuster movie has reached a point of saturation for me. One that chooses to focus more on spectacle and excessive action over character development and real storytelling. Looking back, I actually think the original Michael Bay Transformers movie might have been the genesis for this overall trend. Because while they might not be loved, a hell of a lot of people went to watch them.
