A couple of new trailers dropped this week for two movies I should probably be pretty excited for. The problem is, Hollywood is just becoming less and less subtle about how hard they’re relying on nostalgia to keep people coming to see movies. Both the trailers for the adaptation of Ready Player One and Jurassic World 5/Fallen Kingdom popped up on Youtube and I felt more annoyed than excited after seeing them.
I’m at the point in my life now where all the things I enjoyed growing up have become mainstream again, because the people like me who enjoyed them growing up are now the people behind them. But rather than do anything new or interesting with these properties, large media producers are just banking on the fact that nostalgia itself is going to be enough to sell their product as it is. Why make something new or original when you can just point and say “Hey, remember this thing from when you were a kid? Us too! So I went to EGX again this year. This would be the point in the article where, if I’d have been a real journalist, I’d have given a brief background into EGX. But I honestly can’t be bothered to make that kind of effort right now. All you need to know is that it’s a big video gaming and culture convention that take place in the West Midlands of the U.K. for 4 days a year.
It’s the third time I’ve gone in as many years and it’s pretty standard fare as far as these type of conventions go. A bunch of developers, large and small, show up and pedal their wares, so to speak. On top of that there are plenty of other attractions. People selling niche and retro merchandise based on video games, or other things the type of people who go to this type of event will probably like. Continue reading “My time at EGX 2017”
I like Destiny 2. Is that a surprise? considering the stupid amount of hours I put into the original game, the fact that I am also playing far too much of the sequel should shock nobody. That I’ve already put 100 hours into the game in little under three weeks should prove that. Wow, when I say that out loud it sounds really bad.
It’s not to say I think the game is perfect though. While it’s better on the whole than the first game was upon release, there are a whole array of things I’d wish they had left the same. The customisation of subclasses for example. Also while set stats on weapons are a good thing, it takes come of the shine off getting a really good gun. All that aside, the one thing I have genuine to goodness mixed feelings on is the game’s new style of crucible. Which is its competitive multiplayer if you didn’t know that.

Y’know what my favourite Sonic game of the past decade has been? Sonic Generations, an opinion most Sonic the Hedgehog apologists like myself probably hold. So when Sega and Sonic Team went back on saying they were going to make a sequel to it and announced Sonic Forces, I was suitably… Excited is too strong a word. Mildly optimistic is better.

I already mentioned I wasn’t too hot on the new Mass Effect. The thing I felt was one of the biggest let downs in Andromeda was that it felt like a Video Game first and a story second. I know, crazy right. Seriously though, I never really cared about the gameplay aspects of Mass Effect. It was always the world building and the character interactions that drew me in, and I think a lot of other people felt the same way. It was a kind of science fiction, a space opera that we rarely see in video games, and it might have been too much to hope that EA would allow Bioware to do something similar for Andromeda.
